Temporary protection checklist

Project checklist

What has been covered up, when it went on, when it came off, and what the finish looked like underneath.

The dispute this sheet settles

Terrazzo, millwork, glazing, elevator cabs — the expensive finishes go in early and get covered for four months, and what happens underneath is invisible until handover. Two dates and a condition note per area is the cheapest insurance on the job.

It recommends nothing

No required protection, no material, no method and no code requirement is published here. The tool holds what you decided to do and when. What is permitted in an occupied or rated space is a question for your jurisdiction.

Around it

Damage found at the end goes on the punch list. Cleaning before handover is the final cleaning checklist, and everything owed at the end is the closeout checklist.

A record of protection you installed and removed. It publishes no required protection, recommends no material or method, and states no fire, safety or code requirement. Everything runs on your device.

Questions people ask

Why record the condition when protection comes off?
Because that is the argument. A damaged finish discovered at handover is a dispute between everybody who worked in the area, and the only thing that settles it is a dated note of what it looked like when the covering came off — written by the person who removed it, before the next trade arrives.
Does it say what has to be protected, or with what?
No. It publishes no required protection, recommends no product or method and states no fire, safety or code requirement for any temporary covering. Some protection materials carry restrictions in occupied or fire-rated areas; that is a matter for your jurisdiction and your own program.
Can I track protection that goes on and off repeatedly?
Each row is one protection arrangement over one area, with a date on and a date off. Where the same area is covered again, that is a new row — which is right, because the condition it was in on each occasion is a different fact.
What if the finish was already damaged when I covered it?
Say so in the detail, on the day you covered it. A record made before the covering goes on is worth several arguments afterwards, and nothing in the tool prevents a row that documents pre-existing damage.
