The number, and nothing done to it

A reading is what somebody saw on a face at a moment. This tool keeps that, with the date, the time and the name of whoever took it, and does nothing else to it. There is no expected usage, no normal range, no rate, no cost and no conversion.

That is not the tool being lazy. What a reading means on an invoice depends on the tariff, the multiplier, the read cycle and what the utility did with last month’s estimate. The dated numbers are the part nobody can reconstruct afterwards, and they are what every billing dispute actually turns on.

Every meter is its own record

A main and four submeters are five histories, not one sheet with five columns. Each meter is set up once — what it measures, the unit on its face, main or sub, what it serves, its number and any multiplier — and each prints its own monthly log. A submeter’s readings never land on the main’s record.

The unit is yours: kWh, ccf, therms, gallons, cubic feet, or whatever is printed on that particular meter. It prints beside the number. A meter with two registers carries both through readings you name yourself.

An estimate is marked as one

A read that was estimated rather than taken is flagged on the entry, because six months later the difference between a read and an estimate is the whole argument. Leave it blank and it stays blank — nothing is assumed either way.

Where the meters live

In the same equipment registry as the rest of the building, so a meter carries a history like anything else. A reading that shows something wrong becomes a tracked item in the corrective action tracker, and the monthly sheet files into Records.

What should a meter reading log record?

Can I keep a main meter and submeters together?

What if the meter reads in something unusual?
You type the unit yourself when you set the meter up — kWh, ccf, therms, gallons, cubic feet, whatever is on the face — and it prints beside the number. A meter with two registers can carry both through the extra readings you name yourself. Nothing is converted.
