Emergency utility shutoff register

Where it is, which one it is, and who to call — on one printed page.

A pipe lets go at 2am and the person on shift has worked here three weeks. This is the page they need: where it is, which one it is, and who to call. It records locations and contacts — it does not print procedures, and for fire and life-safety systems it points at the people whose decision that is.

A reference sheet: what the shutoff is, where it is and who to call. It does not hold operating procedures, and for fire and life-safety systems it identifies and refers only.

Nothing recorded for this building yet. Start with the three somebody would run for — water, gas and the electrical main.

What the shutoff register is for

Where the shutoffs are, which one is which, and who to call. A pipe lets go at 2am and the person on shift has worked here three weeks. This records where the water, gas and electrical shutoffs are, how to tell them apart from the four valves beside them, and the number to ring — then prints the page for the emergency binder. Locations and contacts only: it holds no operating procedures, and for fire and life-safety systems it identifies and refers rather than instructing anybody to take them out of service. The thing you came to do is “find the shutoff fast”, and this is the page that does it.

It is filed under compliance & safety — emergency plans, drills, training, permits and the records a surveyor asks for — and under “track something”, which is registers that answer a question later. There is one page for it, at this address, however you arrived.

Written for whoever is on shift when something lets go.

When people reach for it

  • Where every shutoff is, before somebody needs it at 2am — people arrive here typing “utility shutoff”, “shutoff”, “water shutoff”.

What it records, and where the record goes

Where it is, which one it is, and who to call — on one printed page. Each entry is kept in this tool's own register rather than as a loose document, which is what lets the register answer the question months later instead of you re-reading a stack of paper. What you enter stays in this browser, on this device. There is no account to make and nothing is uploaded; it reaches another device only if you activate CompliMaint Cloud Beta and sign in.
