Opened and closed, not planned and delivered

A matter is not a project and this product refuses to pretend otherwise. A project ends when the work is finished; a file ends when the person outside your organization is finished with it, which can be months after anybody here stopped working on it. Pending outside is a state of its own for exactly that reason — most of the time a file is open, nobody on your side can do anything about it.

Your reference, never ours

This generates no file number. Whatever numbering you or your advisors use is the number that means something, and one invented here would be untraceable in every other system that mattered. What is stable internally is an id you never see, so two files that happen to share a reference are still two files.

What hangs off it

Four registers point at a matter by its id: dates somebody gave you, document requests, contract reviews and filings and submissions. Each row on the list shows how many are open against it.

Is this practice management software?
No, and the list of what it does not do is longer than the list of what it does. There is no time recording, no billing, no rates, no invoicing and no client trust or escrow accounting; no conflicts checking; no docketing, court rules or limitation periods; no legal research; and nowhere to put privileged substantive material. It is a list of files, who is responsible for each and where each one has got to.
Why is a matter not a project?
Because a project is planned and delivered and a matter is opened and closed. A project ends when the work is done; a file ends when whoever is outside your organization is finished with it. They share the mechanics of a lifecycle and nothing else, which is why they are two separate things here with two separate stage lists.
Does it check for conflicts?
No, and it never will. A conflicts search that missed something would be considerably worse than no search at all, because somebody would have run it and relied on the result. Conflicts checking is a professional obligation carried out against records this product does not have.
Does it claim anything is privileged or confidential?
No. This is a page running in your browser, on your device, backed up wherever you back it up. It makes no claim of privilege or confidentiality over anything you type, and the notes box says so: administration only, and nothing you would call privileged.
