Matter file closure checklist

Checklist

The steps you take before a matter goes to the archive, and which are actually done.

The closing counterpart to intake, and short for the same reason

It is a list of closing steps, not the file — so there is no large narrative box on it, the same decision the new matter intake checklist made. A big empty box on a legal tool collects the client’s story by accident. Seven ordinary steps arrive ready to edit, delete or replace, and the last one points at the archive index where the box gets recorded.

It calculates nothing about time

No limitation period, no statutory clock, no retention period and no filing deadline. What must be kept, for how long, and what has to happen before a file can safely close are questions for somebody who knows your obligations — and a number invented by a free tool would be relied on by somebody closing a file for the last time.

A working list of closing steps. It calculates no limitation period, supplies no retention period, states no filing deadline and makes no determination that a file is safe to close. Not legal advice. Everything runs on your device.

Questions people ask

Does it work out the limitation period?
No. CompliMaint calculates no limitation period, no statutory clock and no deadline of any kind.
How long do I keep a closed file?
CompliMaint supplies no retention period. That comes from your own schedule and your own obligations.
Can I change the suggested steps?
All of them. They are ordinary rows from the moment they land.
What happens after the last step?
Record the box in the archive index, which is where somebody will look for it in five years.
