Matter costs estimate

Worksheet

An estimate built from your own rates and hours, with its working shown and a balance.

Rate and hours show your working; nothing multiplies them

The amount on a line is the figure you wrote. The rate and the hours sit beside it so the estimate SHOWS ITS BASIS to the person reading it, which is the part clients argue about — but the tool multiplies nothing and suggests nothing. A rate produced by this product would be a recommendation about what somebody may charge, and that comes from an engagement letter and from the rules that apply where you practice.

Money on account and allowances come off the balance

A line typed as a payment is money already received; a credit is an allowance you are making. The balance at the foot is what your own figures say is still to be billed. It is arithmetic on numbers you typed, and it is not a bill.
