- Do landlords have to give rent receipts?
- Several states — including New York, Maryland, Washington, and California — require landlords to provide a written receipt when rent is paid in cash (and in some cases for other payment methods or on request). Even where it isn't required, a numbered receipt protects both sides if a payment is ever disputed.
