Do landlords have to give rent receipts?
Several states — including New York, Maryland, Washington, and California — require a written receipt when rent is paid in cash (and in some cases for other methods or on request). Even where it isn't required, a numbered receipt protects both sides if a payment is disputed. Check your state's current law.
