Drills or rehearsals of the emergency steps at IRREGULAR TIMES OF DAY, at least six a year and SPACED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, with two of the six conducted while residents are asleep.
- Maine licenses assisted living, residential care and private non-medical institutions under one chapter with different levels. Confirm which level you hold — the standards differ by level within the same rule.
- The 'irregular times' and 'spaced throughout the year' wording is a real constraint: six drills clustered in one month satisfies the count and fails the rule.

The part that is the same everywhere
The federal floor does not vary by state. OSHA 29 CFR §1910.38 binds any employer: reporting an emergency, evacuation and exit-route assignments, critical-operations shutdown, accounting for everyone afterwards, rescue and medical duties, and naming who to ask about the plan.
